How to Increase Your Restaurant's Google Rating

A low Google rating costs a restaurant customers before they ever walk in. Most people compare ratings on Google Maps before choosing where to eat, and many skip anything below 4.0. A rating can be improved. It mostly takes consistency.

How is a Google rating calculated?

Your rating is the average of every star rating on your Google Business Profile, shown to one decimal place. Every review counts equally, so the more reviews you have, the more new reviews it takes to change the number.

For example, a restaurant with 80 reviews and a 4.1 rating needs 64 new 5-star reviews to reach 4.5. A restaurant with 200 reviews at 4.3 needs 150 to reach 4.6. You can check your own numbers with our free Google rating calculator.

Why do good restaurants end up with low ratings?

Unhappy guests are more likely to leave a review than happy ones. Someone who waited an hour for cold food wants to say so. Someone who had a nice dinner goes home and forgets about it. Over time, a large share of your reviews come from your worst nights, and your rating ends up lower than your everyday service deserves.

So the fix is to hear from more of the guests who had a good time.

Step 1: Fix what the low reviews are telling you

Read your 1, 2 and 3-star reviews from the last six months and note what each one complains about. If the same thing keeps coming up (slow service on weekends, food arriving cold, a long wait for the bill), fix that first. New good reviews help less if the same problem keeps producing new bad ones.

Step 2: Ask every guest for an honest review

The biggest lever is the number of reviews from ordinary, satisfied guests. Ask every guest at the table when the bill arrives. The meal is still fresh and their phone is usually already in hand. A short line is enough: "If you enjoyed your meal, an honest Google review really helps us."

Ask everyone, not only the guests who look happy. Google's review policy does not allow you to choose who to ask based on their experience, ask for a specific rating, or pay for positive reviews. Breaking these rules can get reviews removed or your listing restricted.

Step 3: Make leaving a review take seconds

Many guests who mean to leave a review give up when they have to search for your restaurant, find the right listing and look for the review button. Put a QR code on the table, in the bill folder or on the receipt that opens your review page directly. See how to get more Google reviews for your restaurant for where to place it.

Step 4: Reply to every review

Replies don't change the average, but they change how people read it. A calm, specific reply to a bad review shows new customers that someone is listening. A short thank-you to a good review shows that reviews are noticed. Our guide on handling a bad restaurant review includes an example reply.

Step 5: Flag reviews that break the rules

If a review is clearly fake, posted by a competitor, or meant for a different business, flag it from your Google Business Profile and Google will look at it. Genuine negative reviews can't be removed, so put that time into steps 1 to 4 instead.

How long does it take to raise a Google rating?

It depends on how many reviews you already have and how many guests you serve. A restaurant that asks at every table often sees new reviews within the first week. A visible change in the rating usually takes two to three months of steady asking. Recent reviews also matter on their own, because customers look at the dates as well as the stars.

What should you avoid?

  1. Buying reviews or joining review exchange groups. Google detects these and removes them.
  2. Offering a discount or gift only for 5-star reviews.
  3. Asking staff, friends or family to post reviews.
  4. Arguing with reviewers in public.

TableReview was built for steps 2 and 3. A QR code on the table takes guests straight to your Google review page and gives them loyalty points for coming back, whatever they write. You can try the guest demo or see pricing.

Quick answers

Common questions.

How can a restaurant increase its Google rating?

Fix the problems that recent low reviews point to, then ask every guest for an honest review at the table, using a QR code that opens your Google review page directly. More reviews from satisfied guests raise the average over time.

How many 5-star reviews does it take to go from 4.1 to 4.5?

With 80 existing reviews, it takes 64 new 5-star reviews. The number depends on how many reviews you already have. The free Google rating calculator on tablereview.net works it out for any rating and review count.

Can I delete bad Google reviews to improve my rating?

Only reviews that break Google's policies, such as fake reviews or harassment, can be flagged for removal. Genuine negative reviews stay, so the reliable way to raise your rating is more honest reviews from happy guests.
